A therapist often has to find a way to expand his/her/their self. In that regard, I have been passionately following the Talking Therapy Podcast Series hosted by long-term friends and psychotherapy giants Dr. Allen Frances and Dr. Marvin Goldfried.
Who are they?
Who are these people? Even though I read and was influenced by both of their work, I did not know them by name until I started to listen to their podcast. Let me introduce them to you by quoting their show synapsis.
don’t know about you, but when I try to delve into the podcast sphere about psychology and or psychotherapy, everything I find sounds so dull (I know, right!). People either tend to give advice or turn everything into a lecture (I might be guilty of that as well). This is different for them. The conversation feels genuine and wise. You can clearly see from the beginning that they are good friends. This is not a podcast series done by two people who were forced by their school or business, which makes it easier to listen.
Topics
The more exciting part is that Dr. Goldfried and Dr. Frances are trained by the schools of therapy that are not compatible at all. While Dr. Frances is a classically trained psychoanalyst, Dr. Goldfried is a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. I used to think both disciplines were good for something specific, but they changed my mind. In each episode, they choose a topic, explain it from their perspective and finish the session by emphasizing the similarities. Thanks to them, I started to see that each and every school of psychotherapy are built upon the same core principles.
I recommend that you listen and check out all episodes of Talking Therapy – Podcast Series. Each episode is 30 minutes. You can find their show on Spotify and YouTube. They talk about different topics each week. Some of my favourite subjects are
- Common Stages of Change
- Why Psyctherapy Fails
- Psychotherapy Fads
- The Making of DSM
- Intuition & Evidence-Based Therapy
- Therapist Advice
- Self-Disclosure
- Humor In Therapy
- Doing Therapy Without Thinking
I often share some of the episodes with my colleagues and clients alike. I also encourage you to read their published work and research as well.
